Project Thrive

I launched my Philosophical Coaching practice out of desperation. The academic job path looked bleak, I'd just had a baby, and philosophical coaching was the only thing I could think to do with my Ph.D. in philosophy that didn't make me want to cry everyday.

I didn't know the first thing about running my own business. I told myself I didn’t have the risk-tolerance, the acumen, the hustle. I didn’t want to make sales. Ew.

But, it was either coaching or crying. And I was tired of crying.

So, I read every business book I could get my hands on. I fumbled through learning how to invoice, find clients, make offers. I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. A lot. It sucked.

But, the thought of getting a job I hated felt even worse. So, I re-read the books that led me toward connection, vision, and service. I followed my intuition through trial and error, false starts, and failed ideas. I learned so many things the hard way. But, slowly, over a few years, I figured it out.

Now, I can now set my own schedule and do what I love, full time. This year, I'm on track to make six figures. I still have time to work on my book manuscript, (planning to finish this revision by Thanksgiving), and I stop work everyday at 3:45 to pick my daughter up from the bus stop.

A few years ago, something curious happened: other coaches and counselors started to reach out to me for business help. I started to share what I’d learned and how I run my business, and I was delighted (and relieved) that people started seeing results! Some coaches got their first paying clients. Others saw major increases in their income. One client went from scrambling to pay the bills to transforming her business so that she is now able to take two months of vacation a year. Two months!

I was surprised to learn that I actually really enjoy helping people start and grow their businesses. I was a philosophy student who used to roll her eyes at business majors and judge them for having their priorities mixed up. But I discovered that being an entrepreneur is one of the most creative, bravest, most exciting things I’ve ever done.

That said, entrepreneurship as a coach or counselor can be lonely work. I’ve learned that when you learn alongside others, share wins, get encouragement, troubleshoot problems, and share woes, it can feel a lot easier and a lot more fun. As an educator, I also know the power and magic that can happen when you get a group of people together.

That’s why I’m creating a group to help coaches and counselors launch and grow their businesses.
